Where to find me this Christmas

Mermaid and fish glass sculpture

I have been really busy getting ready for all the Christmas exhibitions and shows and now they are all up and running.

You can find me at Thelma Hulbert Gallery‘s Present Makers Show in Honniton with lots of upcoming Devonshire makers. Its always a great show with an emphasis on ceramics this year.

I am also in my regular Christmas home upstairs at The Real Food Store Cafe in Exeter. This great cafe show my work every year and I am pleased to have lots of new work and Christmas decorations in there this year again.

Finally, the TAAG Affordable Art Fair is up and running in Northumberland Place in Teignmouth and we are having a late night shopping night from 5-7 pm on Sunday 14th December, with wine and music, so come and join us and get some unique Christmas presents with musical benefits!

A new glass design! But how to sell it?

My new design is ready for the shops! My eldest daughter requested me make her some bunting spelling her name and it has come out so well I think it would make a really nice gift for a birthday, or a wedding decoration or gift  personalised with whatever name/word and colours you want. The lettering is simple and clear to read and each flag has a unique little hand painted folksy pattern on it in a vintage/gypsy style which are hand painted by me and fired in the kiln. They work out at £5 per letter, which makes it easy for customers to know how much they have to pay BUT I dont know how to do this on my online shops, do people have to buy lots of individual letters or should I do packs of 4 letters, 6 letters etc? Or do I just get people to email me and I list a custom item for each name? Any thoughts welcome!

Imagining Florence

I have recently been commissioned to create a panel as a very special wedding present for a couple getting married in September. They both love Italy and are honeymooning there, so the theme is Italian, specifically Tuscany. I adore Italy and as soon as she said Tuscany I had images of  Florentine roof tops in my head! She was excited by this idea too and so I have whittled my drawing down to 2 depictions of the city………..I wonder which one she will choose?

Craft fairs, commissions, drawing and making

My first week back from holiday has been so busy, we knew it would be and my husband Mark had the week off work to look after the children, so I could get on with stuff and he could spend a week chilling out with the girls (if such a thing is possible with our kids!)

I have spent much of the week making bunting, hearts and beach hut panels to restock what has been sold at fairs and online and to fulfill my wholesale order for Atelier Gallery in Barnstable (due this Friday).  The photos show a little of this activity; the bunting laid out ready to be soldered and then piled up, post soldering ready to be washed and hung on ribbon and the glass cut for 3 beach hut panels, (heading to Otterton Mill) with their sticky back plastic fish and waves stuck on waiting to be acid etched, then leaded and cemented.

The Exeter Craft Hub event on Saturday was a great success and they gave me a stall right in front of a massive window, which gave my stall a lot of light and I could actually hang things in the window to give people an idea of how they look at home.

My most popular designs have sold so well in the last few weeks that I have unexpectedly run out of certain materials, which is bad for the schedule, but good for some of my customers; as it means whilst I wait for supplies I have had an unexpected window of opportunity this afternoon to work on a new commission.

Jane , otherwise known as  Kind Dog (a fellow Folksy seller and talented illustrator, click on her name to go to her shop)  has kindly asked me to make a special panel for her niece’s wedding present.  I love doing special items, but this one is especially close to my heart; as she wants it to depict the North Norfolk coast which her niece loves and is the county where I was born and brought up! I hardly get to go back to Norfolk these days, the 7 hour drive is too long for my young children, so the opportunity to think about the beaches  I played on as a child has been a treat! I have prepared 3 drawings based on the North Norfolk coast around Heacham and I have gone from Holkham to Cromer in the drawings, I wonder which she will choose?

Commissioned, Made, Sold, Photographed……..and cake

My feet have hardly touched the floor this week! Its been very busy, but very good.  I have just finished a 3 piece commission of wedding thank you gifts for the best man and the mother of the groom and bride. I am very pleased with the results and I got to use my new engraving pen! I have listed personalised lily designs on my Folksy shop, you choose the colour and the message engraved on the panel; perfect for wedding gifts or to commemorate special occasions.

I received photos of a recent commission looking beautiful in situ.  I am hopefully starting on a new project with these clients soon.

Following being featured in one of this weeks newsletters from Etsy I have had a real run on my Etsy shop, which has been amazing and I went from having no sales whatever on there to 9 in 48 hours! Needless to say I have been busy making new stock to replace my recent good fortune!

Ah, and finally, I had a brilliant, time with my friend Joe and my family at the Heart of Devon Music Festival on Sunday, it was not the most commercially successful of days, but we had a lovely time, met some lovely people and ate some very nice cake! My kids had a riot (they love a good music festival!). I also had a lovely view from my gazebo

Being a busy, busy bee, commissions and empty milk cartons and me!

I have been so busy my blog has become quite neglected!

I have a new recycled public art commission, making a sculpture out of empty milk cartons for Dairy Crest, this will be displayed in a Morrissons supermarket and  they are delivering me 300 + empty cartons soon! This is part of their promotion for the new Jugit system, which is intended to reduce the waste from milk cartons by 75% . Here is a rough drawing, but the full effect wont be realised  till I have it in 3D!

I have 2 new commissions, one for a lovely family in Scotland making a mountain scene and another making panels for the grooms gifts for a wedding, 2 lily panels and a train! Both of these commissions will let me use my new toy, I mean tool. I have finally saved up for a really good quality engraving pen and I have been practicing with it. I am very excited about the detail I will now be able to add to my work and it will allow me to personalise items more professionally too.

Craft fair season is in full swing and the Hand Made Home fair in Exeter this weekend was a great success, I sold 25 of my brooches!!! and many other things, thanks everyone who came and supported it!

This Sunday I will be at the Heart of Devon Show, in Bow outside Crediton, so please pop along if you are in the area.

For the rest of the week I am making stock to replace all the stuff I sold last weekend and my Folksy shop has been busy, so there have been lots of trips to the post office!  Its busy, busy, busy, just how I like it!

OH and my new Indie Smiles article was published yesterday, writer with the most comments wins a prize, so please go read it and comment away!

Life’s a beach

I seem to have the seaside on the brain this week. I am longing for the good weather to be back! so I am imagining myself there with lots of colourful designs, but a bit of shelter from the wind, I finished this one today and will make the other designs tomorrow, hopefully!

I am a stained glass artist working in Exeter and a busy mum of 2; trying to carve a path through the tide of washing and children's toys that stands between me and making beautiful things.
